Jurgen Schadeberg – Celebrating Nelson Mandela
Yesterday evening I visited the Belgravia gallery, London, to celebrate the work of Jurgen Schadeberg. I had arrived knowing little to nothing about him and was pleasantly surprised at how moving the exhibition and in particular his speech was. He discussed at length his time and friendship with Nelson Mandela, who he knew and photographed before his imprisonment of 27 years and after. He was able to tell touching stories as well as go into detail about the context of some of the photographs on display that he had taken. There were also original pieces of artwork by Mandela on show. Overall it was a very moving evening and the collection was pleasant. I would recommend stopping in to catch a bit of history whilst you can and perhaps picking up one of the books on sale on Schadeberg’s life and works.
